Okanagan Lake Rescue 2016

Jul 24, 2016

The Vernon Search and Rescue (VSAR) team was called by RCMP to Okanagan Lake Friday afternoon to search for two missing individuals, who had rented a personal watercraft and were overdue.

Local high-wind weather conditions and large search area were factors that contributed towards the search being potentially dangerous and life-threatening for the subjects.

Last night was our monthly general meeting...and the topic of the night was Search and Rescue's role in wildfire evacuations. Don Blakely, a search manager with Vernon Search and Rescue, led the discussion, bringing a plethora of personal experience and examples from our past involvement in the Salmon Arm, Cedar Hill, Kelowna, Falkland, and Terrace Mountain wildfires of past years.

Say 'hello' to our local AdventureSmart team (joined this last weekend by our very own Coralie Nairn who has been teaching the AdventureSmart program to local school aged children for some 15 years).

AdventureSmart has started a new initiative, which will be bringing these two young ladies to various events and locations throughout the Okanagan and Kootenay regions (they are based out of Kelowna), with a goal to promote SAFETY and PREVENTION.

Request for assistance

Jul 04, 2016

Yesterday (July 3) was a busy day!!

At approximately 8:45pm, Vernon Search and Rescue received a second request for assistance...this time from the BC Ambulance Service.

Our information was that a subject had fallen a considerable distance onto rocks and was very badly injured. However, BC Ambulance crews were unable to assist as the subject was across Mable Lake from where the road ends (at the Enderby end).

Injured mountain biker in the Ellison Park

Jun 30, 2016

at approximately 10:00pm, Vernon Search and Rescue was called to rescue an injured mountain biker in the Ellison Park mountain bike trail area.

The young lady had a severe puncture wound in her calf caused by a tree branch.

The trails in the area are mainly narrow single track, which are unsuitable for ATV travel, and darkness prevented the use of a helicopter. As a result, our crews were forced to hike into her location, which took the better part of 2 hours.
